i had never heard of sonic before this summer. this is totally an american cultural thing. where else in the world would they have a food place where you can only drive-thru or drive-in, but not actually go inside a restaurant? i wish i had taken pictures of what it looked like! i guess i'm starting to notice things like this about the US more. but it helps that i'd never heard of sonic before either.
my brother and his girlfriend and i went there randomly during a time we were visiting our family and we went back to the house on a day in 90 degree (F) weather from being out with everyone, but for various reasons, no one was home and we didn't have a key. they suggested going to sonic (and i said, "what's that?") and so that's where we went. they sell ice cream and various fruit drinks, especially limeade, and slushies and floats and milkshakes and things like that, and also some burgers too, i think.
you can either go through the drive-thru OR park and then order, but you can't get out of the car because there is no where to go inside! (i still can't believe i've never heard of this before) you look at the menu that is posted next to every parking place and then push a button when you're ready to order and tell the person over the speaker inside the little building (that contains only a kitchen, basically) what you want to order. you pay by swiping your credit card on the machine right there, or when the person on roller skates comes out bringing what you ordered. then you can sit there and enjoy your food and drinks in your personal parking space, and drive away whenever you want to. (of course if you go through the drive-thru instead, then you just leave as soon as you get your order.)
we came away with some kind of milkshake, some kind of lemon berry slushie that i got, and daniel got this giant limeade. it's as big as his head.
this is so totally american. on a hot summer day, in order to stay cool, drive to sonic, order without getting out of your car, hang out in your car with the car running and air conditioning on and eat/drink cold things. i could feel myself being american for a little while there. =)

yep, certainly American. Drive-ins became very popular in the 1950s. Sonic is a blast from the past, with a modern twist (they didn't have credit cards in the 1950s). :)

hah, never heard of sonic?? I guess that's kind of like me trying in-n-out this year.
ReplyDeleteI suppose it's a midwest thing primarily. I was introduced to it by the obsession of all my church friends from furlough in Kansas. It's definitely not just drinks, actually what they were famous for was their burgers.
Currently they are majorly promoting their drinks, but they also serve a full breakfast meal.
What everyone had me try back in the 90's was their cherry limeade. It's still good!:)
except in-n-out doesn't exist outside of california and oregon (and arizona?) as far as i know. but i guess sonic is pretty new to california, because i'm pretty sure i would have known if it was there in my parents' town when i was in high school. and yup, my brother told me all about the cherry limeade. =)
DeleteLet's see...Sonic....is that that fast food place on the other side of the freeway? Um, never been there...yet. You may have just talked me into going. Do they have drink sizes that are smaller than Daniel's head?
