back home in china

probably the first thing i notice coming back to china in the summer is the way the air feels, the way it sits humidly around you.  it's comforting to me because it feels the same way summers felt in japan when i was growing up.  i like it.  i'll take summer over winter any day.

the driver who brought me home from the airport was so nice.  he didn't turn the radio on during the whole drive until the very end because he was letting me sleep because it was late at night.  he helped me carry my suitcases inside the building.  he called me when he couldn't find me in the airport and i was able to talk to him on the phone in chinese (yes!).

when i got back to my apartment, a bag of groceries was hanging on my door that alison went and got for me.  she is so awesome!  she knew exactly what to buy for me too: bread, milk imported from new zealand, soft chocolate chip cookies, orange juice, yakult yogurt drinks, and tuna (it's only too bad that i ran out of mayonnaise right before i went to the US!). because of her, i could go to the giant annoying grocery store with the long lines whenever i felt like it this week instead of having to go the day i got back!

i had to get a new card to use to get in the front door of my building.  usually they don't lock the front door, but they had just started to actually lock it pretty regularly right before i left for the US.  the night i got back, it wasn't locked, but the next day it was, so i got the new card.  i saw some people trying to get in the side door since the main front door was locked, but the side day was locked too (sometimes in the past it's been unlocked and propped open if the front door was locked).  it was kind of funny to me that they were trying to figure out how to open the locked side door, when it was obviously locked.  they were spending a lot of time on it too.  the day after that, when i left to go to school, the side door was completely broken, knocked inside the building into the entryway, a perfect rectangle of shattered glass, but the frame of the door was still intact (probably locked).  and the front door was unlocked.  clearly someone *really* wanted to get in the side door.  it's interesting how against using a card to get into the building people are.  it is inconvenient, yes, but they seem more concerned with that than the supposed effort to make the building more secure.  it's a good thing i don't really care that much!  i can just be amused by it all and be ok that it's easier to get into my building than it should be.  especially since i forget the card in various bags sometimes.

and then there was a day that *both* of the elevators in my building were out when i came out of my apartment in the morning, so i couldn't take my bike downstairs, so i got to walk down 16 flights of stairs (not bad going down) and walk everywhere that day (ok, but i'm lazy and prefer the bike because it's faster and less effort for me).

and today i rode my bike to school in the rain wearing a bright pink rain covering thing that is like a giant poncho made for someone riding a bike, and it says "VERY GOOD" on the back.

so yes, i am back. =)

  1. I want to see a picture of this "very good" poncho! Does it mean a "very good bicycle rider?"
