so, there is a market near our house. the main part is indoors, and then outside along the street there are all sorts of street vendors. there are various vendors inside, including vegetables, fruits, eggs, meat, and also tailors! there are several different vendors selling each thing. the tailors are people who sit there with fabric and sewing machines. if you bring them something, they will mend it for you, or if you need something made, you can bring them an example and they will make it. for example, a friend of mine brings her pants there to be hemmed so they are the right length. i think another friend had a cloth bag that she used all the time that was coming apart fixed there. i haven't tried that yet. i actually haven't personally bought anything from inside the market yet, although i do need to learn to buy eggs. most of us don't ever buy meat there because it's just kind of sitting there... we bought our meat at the grocery store instead.
but outside the market along the street there is lots of yummy food to be bought! in the morning, there are a couple different kind of "breakfast burritos" (except not...they aren't really burritos at all, although they kind of look like one, and they definitely don't have anything inside that a burrito would have). well, i don't have a picture of that right now and it's kind of hard to describe. there's also this awesome rice thing that i like to buy if i go there for breakfast, but i don't have a picture of that either. so on to the things i have pictures of for now--these things are mostly available only at dinner time.
so walking along outside the market in the evening, there is the lady selling different kinds of steamed bread with things inside, then the skewered meat people, the lady who makes cold noodles (actually very good, i think!), the "burrito" people, the corn on the cob guy, the ice cream people, the dumpling people, the bakery people, the bread lady...and then often there are several different people making the same type of thing. oh, and also there are several different fruit stands outside.
i like to buy melon from a particular lady. they have melons sitting there, cut in half and covered in plastic wrap so that you can see them. if you want, you can taste part before you buy it. then she will take the one that i want, and cut up however much i want and give it to me in a plastic bag (pretty much everything in the market gets put in a plastic bag after it's bought).

this melon is so good! it's awesome buying fresh fruit instead of the kind that sits in the store waiting.probably my favorite non-fruit food in the market is baozi (say "bow tze"), steamed bread with stuff inside. this one lady sells about 12 different kinds, but i only have written down how to say 2 kinds. sometimes i buy from another lady because she always has the kind with meat inside and i know where she keeps it. =)

these are the other kinds i've tried (they were given to me in a plastic bag too):
bet you can't guess what's inside! aren't they pretty?anyway, here is the inside:
the one on the left has cabbage and mushrooms inside (mostly cabbage). that one may be my favorite, although the meat one is very good too. the one on the right has spicy noodles inside! don't know if you can really tell. it's like vermicelli noodles. it seemed really strange when i first saw it, but it's actually really good.
finally, eating a "burrito" (can't remember what it's actually called):
this one has noodles inside, just like the baozi above. there is also a kind with fried strips of potato inside that i like better, but i didn't know how to ask for that kind, and you can't really tell what's inside after they've wrapped it up. =)so there was a very small taste of the market for you, especially since i realized as i was writing this that there are several other things i've eaten there that i have no pictures for right now, and you still have no idea what the market actually looks like... someday perhaps! :D
