a friend of mine gave me a lovely bouquet of flowers for my birthday.
i hadn't personally encountered a chinese bouquet of flowers in quite some time, and the experience was interesting. i decided i wanted to put the bouquet of flowers into a vase. this is what happens.
the outer part of the bouquet is wrapped with thick crinkly lavender paper. the entire bouquet can stand on its own, and the bottom of the bouquet is wrapped around with plastic with water in it. it really could stay just as it came and be perfectly fine for a time. but i chose to untie the gold twisty ties holding the lavender paper onto the bouquet.
one gold twisty came off. but there was another one holding a giant silver bow around the bouquet. then i could take off the lavender paper, two layers of it. then the bouquet was wrapped around with plastic, tied with string. i cut the string and took off the plastic. there was another string tied around more plastic. cut that, took off more plastic. two flowers fell. holding the rest of the bouquet, i put the two flowers in the vase. the two flowers were each individually wrapped around the stem with floofly lavendery tissue paper, AND tied with gold twisty tie up around the actual flower was pink netting-type tissue paper. i would have to take care of that later. the rest of the bouquet first.
i continued to take off plastic, and two flowers came out of the bouquet at a time, and then i would have to take off more plastic to get to the other flowers. finally, all of the flowers were in the vase.
then, from each individual flower, i removed the floofly lavender tissue paper, and the pink netty paper from around the flower itself, AND some of the flowers had long thin wooden sticks taped to the flower at three places around the stem. i took everything off. there was tissue paper and plastic strewn all over the kitchen counter and sink and the floor, but the flowers, devoid of lavender fancy stuff were finally in the vase. just flowers. (ok, with some remnants of floofy lavender stuff that was taped really strongly on that i was too lazy to spend more time cutting off.)
why must bouquet of flowers be extravagantly wrapped? aren't the flowers good enough they way they are, just as flowers? why not just put them together in a pleasing way and leave it at that. but no, it is necessary to dress every individual flower in a floofy lavender dress, no matter what color the flower is, and some of the flowers must also be subject to pink veils and straight wooden corsets, and then suffocated in plastic.
china cannot just give you flowers.
