alone but not lonely

why is it that some people when a long-awaited vacation starts do something like, "i'm freeeeee! now let's DO stuff!!" i feel more like, "i'm FREEEE. now leave me alone for about 3 days, and then i'll see if i actually want to do anything after that." i know myself, and i don't feel guilty about actually having that feeling. i work with people all the time, which i love, but i am also the kind of person that needs time by myself. but i am also the kind of person that gets depressed if i spend too much time by myself. but time by myself is not bad, it's good. it's a strange tension. but what this means is that when vacation starts, it means i actually have the freedom to spend an entire day alone and do whatever i want if i feel like it, with NO WORK that i have to do. that is very amazing, for a teacher, to have a whole day and also know that there is no work that has to be done. so when a vacation comes, that is what i want to do. nothing that involves making plans with someone or going somewhere. only special people that have an understanding that we can be together and not have to be DOING something to together (but perhaps we might decide to eventually) are the people i want to "do" something with when i feel like this.

so the guilt comes though, when the other type of person who is free on vacation and wants to DO things asks me to do something or go somewhere and i really don't want to do something or especially go somewhere and i know that i need several days of not doing anything resembling that before i will want to do something like that. so i say no to people who with good intentions want to spend time with me and enjoy each other's company. does this make me terrible person or at least someone that drags other people down or puts out their enthusiasm...? i hope not. but i still have this feeling like, "it's vacation and you have time to do things with people, so why are you saying no?" i want to BE with people, but i don't necessarily want to DO things with people (a lot of the time i feel this way, but especially during the first few days of a vacation--many other times arise where i do actually want to go out and do things with people too--but i can often be content to just be with people and not be doing something together). i know other people exist that feel this way too, but it also makes me feel weird and guilty that i feel this way.

  1. Life is the hardest when interacting with people that are different than you. I've been going through this here, but different is not bad, it's just different.

There's one person here that is only happy when I'm cooking myself Romanian food. She always takes the time to tell me that pasta is a terrible dinner choice, or eggs and toast is a terrible breakfast choice. Oh well, I don't care what she things about my food choices. It helps a lot when I realized that I need to stop being a people pleaser and start just being myself.

These are the things I like and enjoy doing. Deal with it. Merry Christmas. Enjoy your time off. :)

  2. It's nice that you know yourself that well that you realize you need a few days to yourself to just be. I'm glad you actually stick to it as well and tell people no, instead of letting that guilt really get to you and then you go out and do things with those people out of obligation even though you really don't want to. Good for you for being self-aware and loyal to yourself. It's not a thing to be guilty for, it's a healthy thing that other people should respect. :)
