power outtage

the power went out in parts of my apartment complex this afternoon. i noticed the screen of my laptop go a bit dimmer and thought the cord had unplugged, but it hadn't. then i noticed the internet was out. but the video i was watching online at the time was still playing even though the internet wasn't working anymore! it kept playing up to the point it had loaded to so far, and then it stopped. so i learned something new today--videos online can play up to the point they loaded to even if the internet isn't working. interesting.

then i watched the traffic at my apartment complex's gate for awhile. cars would come up to the gate and then start to back into two or three cars behind them (who were also trying to get through the gate) when they realized that they couldn't get through, because there has to be electricity to let cars through the gate. it was kind of funny to watch. it took the guards at least 30 minutes to actually move the gates some other way so that cars could get through. during that time, they had no efficient way to tell cars they wouldn't be able to get through, so the cars kept driving all the way up to the gate with other cars behind them and then all of them would have to back away.

it was kind of nice for one afternoon to reduce myself to only things you can do if there is no power. except that i had really wanted to cook dinner for some friends who were going to come over. for some reason i thought i couldn't cook if there was no power. but my gas stove still worked just fine...so i could have... but they would have had to walk up 16 flights of stairs to get to my apartment, and we would have had to eat by candlelight, and they have a 6 month old baby. so that probably wouldn't have worked out anyway. and then the power came back on 15 minutes after there were supposed to have been at my house. so if i'd realized a lot sooner that i could have made the dinner anyway, they could have come over after all... but i guess it might have been sadder if i'd made the whole dinner and they couldn't have come and then i was sitting there eating it by candlelight by myself. i've been sad lately that i'm so busy that it becomes stressful to spend time with people because i have so little free time, or there is always work i should be doing. and then the one day i had time to spend with people and i'd planned to spend time with people, i didn't get to. sad.

  1. That's pretty funny about the cars not being able to get into the gate, but it's a bummer that it ruined your dinner plans. :(

I'm starting to wonder what life is going to be like here as well. It seems that either I have nothing to do all day, or I'm killing myself with everything that needs to get done.

To remedy my "being overworked" situation, I'm just going to stop committing myself to things so that I will have time to rest. I don't know if that's an option for you. Can you delegate some things? It's important to have personal time for yourself.
